Nitor



Nitor is a semi-intangible mixture of matter and energy, which is receptive to the thoughts of living beings and is able to affect other matter and energy, as well as the fabric of reality. It forms the foundation of all magic, providing the fuel that allows magic to happen while using the will power of a mage as the catalyst. It comes in a large variety of shapes and forms, depending on a variety of factors and which mental or elemental plane it has been attuned to.



Basic Forms of Nitor

  • Vaporeous Nitor: This is the basic state of Nitor. It exists as an invisible and inert gas that is omnipresent within the air, the water, living beings, and all organic matter In high concentrations, it appears as a luminous blue gas. Almost all magic is performed with vaporeous Nitor, and when it is actively being used by a mage, it becomes visible and takes on the appearance of luminous dust, mist, speckled clouds, colored flames, or (most commonly) wisps and orbs of light. When attuned, it will also take on a similar appearance, depending on the energies it has been attuned to.
  • Congealed Nitor: This is Nitor that has been infused within a liquid, and it may or may not be attuned. It is used in alchemy for the creation of potions, and as fuel to power magic items. See the article on Congealed Nitor for more details.
  • Ectoplasm: A form of Nitor that exists in a state similar to that of matter, and can take on almost any physical property. See the article on Ectoplasm for more details.
  • Crystallized Nitor: Also known as Dreamstone, this is Nitor which has achieved sufficient density that it has turned into a crystalline solid which continuously generates a stream of vaporeous nitor, though this Nitor is unstable and breaks down within seconds. Physical Properties

Although Nitor is a gas, it does not exhibit all of the properties of a physical substance, and how it interacts varies greatly depending on what it is interacting with. A branch of engineering called Paratronics exploits the physical properties to develop machines and devices which can either use or manipulate Nitor.

  • Organic Matter: Nitor passes through organic matter as though it wasn't there, and is also attracted to it. Nitor can also be more easily bonded to organic matter when creating magic items.
  • Inorganic Matter: Nitor interacts with inorganic matter the same way as normal vapors do, and will not pass through it. The exception to this is liquids, which do not block the flow of Nitor.
  • Water: Nitor is attracted to water just like organic matter is. Water also slowly causes attuned Nitor to revert to unpatterned Nitor, unless the Nitor has been infused into something. Nitor infused into water will diffuse itself from the water should the water evaporate or become diluted sufficiently.
  • Precious Metals: Despite being inorganic, precious metals do not block the flow of Nitor and will actually accelerate it, almost conducting the Nitor like electricity. This makes precious metals very useful in the creation of magic items and paratronic devices.
  • Crystals: Crystals will absorb and collect surrounding Nitor and can store it at high densities, making them useful in creating storage devices for Nitor. However, extracting the energy requires either skill in magic or bulky and expensive equipment, so bottling congealed Nitor is considered more practical. The storage efficiency of the crystal is improved with the crystal's clarity, refraction index, and lack of inclusions.
  • Cold Iron: Like other most inorganic materials, Iron will repel Nitor that comes in contact with it. However, Cold Iron also has the ability to disrupt nitor and can harm certain magical beings on contact.




Attuned Nitor

This is Nitor which has been atuned to a mental or elemental plane. Depending on what it has been attuned to, it will have many different properties. While there are many kinds of elemental nitors which behave in predictable manners (produce matter/energy associate with element on contact, infused objects produce said energy/matter upon impact and are resistant/immune to the associate matter/energies), there are a few of note which have more exotic properties.
  • Antipodic Nitor: Not really a specific type of nitor. But rather, it is any attuned Nitor which has been specially tuned to counteract nitor of the same type. This makes it useful for counterspelling and dispelling, and it is generally more effective than using entropic nitor for such purposes. Generally, one can only produce antipodic nitor of a type that they are already able to naturally harness.
  • Chaotic Nitor: A form of Nitor which has the power to alter the physical forms of objects and creatures. It forms the basis of alteration magic, and is what fuels the shapeshifting powers of changelings and other supernatural beings.
  • Cosmic Nitor: A form of Nitor with the power to "put life into order". Exposure improves the health of living beings and can reduce the symptoms of psychological disorders and madness. However, abominations and undead burst into flame upon contact with even a little cosmic Nitor, and are burned by this flame even if immune to fire. Larger quantities of cosmic nitor can heal wounds upon the living and render them resistant to the magic of death, undead, and madness, while undead and abominations suffer extreme burns and may be disintegrated. Thuban, the sun, produces light infused with cosmic nitor, so any undead or abominations exposed to direct sunlight will suffer from burns.
  • Death Nitor: A form of Nitor associated with the power of death. It is not only used in most death magic, but is also harnessed for many curses and hexes that inflict harm upon the victim. It also heals the undead, though it is rarely used for creating them because it is less efficient compared to Eldritch Nitor.
  • Eldritch Nitor: A form of Nitor associated with abominations and the undead. It grants life to their twisted forms, and is often used by necromancers for creating undead servants. Eldritch Nitor heals the undead and abominations, while causing both physical and psychological harm to the living, often resulting in madness.
  • Entropic Nitor: A form of Nitor which disrupts charged and attuned Nitor. It used primarily by mages to counteract the magic of others, allowing them to perform counterspelling, dispelling, disenchantment, and enervation. A few paratronic devices exist which create fields of entropic Nitor, acting as magic scramblers. Only experienced mages use it, because harnessing entropic nitor can result in one's own magic being disrupted.
  • Kinetic Nitor: A form of Nitor which can affect the inertia, momentum, buoyancy of objects and creatures. Harnessed by telekinesis, and utilized in some forms of magical flight. Some paratronic airship designs also use engines powered by kinetic Nitor as a replacement for propellers and buoyant gas, though doing so is prohibitively expensive.
  • Life Nitor: A form of Nitor with the power to preserve and restore life. It forms the basis of almost all healing magic, and larger quantities are used in resurrection magic. However, it is also harmful to undead beings, and small amounts of it can cause them to flee in pain and terror.
  • Sacred/Profane Nitor: A form of Nitor associated with many of the mental planes. It is not one type of Nitor, but instead refers to the several kinds of Nitor that are attuned to mental planes formed around religions and ideology. The properties vary greatly depending on the attuned plane, but generally will heal those in line with the plane's energies, and harm those opposed to it.
  • Spatial Nitor: A form of Nitor which is used to manipulate the fabric of space-time. Primarily, it is used for teleportation, gating, and a number of other powers. Combined with entropic nitor, it can also be used to protect an area against spacial intrusions.
  • Verdigris Nitor: A strange form of Nitor associated with the powers of the woodland. It heals plants and bolsters their growth, while healing and strengthening plant beasts. Seeds grow and mature quickly upon exposure to verdigris nitor, while vigor is renewed to aging and dying plants. Magic blasts composed of verdigris Nitor will cause the target to be enveloped in numerous vines
  • Void Essence: A strange substance which destroys matter and energy upon contact, barely leaving any trace except for inert dust. It is usually used for disintegration attacks by some mages, though it is extremely difficult to harness safely. It originates from The Void, and whether or not it is actually a form of Nitor is frequently debated.
